D.R.I, Knuckle Junction, Hillbilly Bo, Chicano Brown, The Jerri Punx and Freedom Assault
review by Mickey Sixx

The show opened up with Freedom Assault, after a few sound checks, the band opened up and let loose some of the best traditional punk rock. Every time I see Freedom Assault, I'm reminded of the days I spent hanging around the D.P.C. Their set  was short, but the songs they filled the time with were good (as always!). If your like me and you like the older sounding punk, then I would highly recommend checking out Freedom Assault, you cant go wrong there.
Next up was a band called The Jerri Punx, I don't know where they came from,  or anything else about this band... What I do know is that they made some great music! I instantly took a liking to this punk rock playing band. They had it all (well, for my musical tastes any how.), great growly vocals, catchy 3-4 chord riffs and a drummer that didn't just play the drums, but beat the hell out of them. I CANT WAIT to hear more from these guys! So, Jerri Punx, if your reading this- get in contact with us!
Now, where to begin with this next band...? Chicano Brown! These fuckers kick so much ass live. A no frills, in your face type of punk and metal mixture that fit fit perfect on this bill. These Vato's Loco's never disappoint, EVER!  This is the 3rd time I've seen them and the music still sounds fresh. The stage presence these guys bring to the stage is incredible. Their songs are fast and heavy and deal with a variety of "hood" elements. To quote our very own writer Billy Walker, "I've said it once and I'll say it again!" Chicano Brown are one of my favorite bands right now!
The night's not over yet, HillBilly Bo came on next. What can you say about this band, well for starters, they kick ass, like a lot! With their odd mix of punk and... Well, country? What ever it is, it works and it works well. They do know how to get a crowd going, as feet were shuffling and heads were swaying to the rhythm. The music, although hard to describe is fun. Bo, as a front man, tears it up on stage while the rest of the band offer up their musical styles on a silver platter for the entire crowd to enjoy.
Knuckle Junction was next. These guys are a great! They get up there, they play and they have fun doing it.  There could be 5 or 500 people in the crown and I bet you  that Knuckle Junction would still play their hearts out. The first time I saw them was at the District Tavern. They played just as hard that night as they did for this show. Straight HardxCore music that beats you down with a wall of sound. In a good way of course. Go and see these guys, they are a great live band (we'll be reviewing their C.D. soon! So stay tuned for that!) and will  definitely leave you musically satisfied by the end of their set.
I have been listening to D.R.I. ever since my friend Joel Robertson made a tape with "I don't need society" on it the summer before I started high school. From  that song on, I was hooked. I did have the pleasure of seeing D.R.I. several years ago at the now defunct Down Town Performance Center. Back then they were still fresh and energetic and could really mix it up with the crowd.
Unfortunately, some 13 years later I cant really say the same. But like the title of the tour exclaimed, this was "The Last Leg Of A 30 Year Tour" and it showed a bit. Gone was the energetic thrasher's of yesteryear, but 4 guys who you probably wouldn't be able to pick from a crowd. Now don't get me wrong, their appearance has nothing to do with their musical prowess, as they still played as good as they ever have and did not disappoint. I was merely making a statement that my "Crossover" hero's have slowed down, as we all do as age slowly creeps up on us. Unfortunately this isn't something you want to see in you idols, hero's or what ever you want to call them.
As for their performance this night, they played like well oiled machines. They seemed to have played every song in their repertoire. The crowd was in typical D.R.I fashion, moshing, crowd surfing and singing along when Spike asked them to. A good performance from a great band, as were all the bands that night.

On a side note, as I mentioned earlier, I grew up listening to D.R.I. and am glad I was able to see them one last time before they stopped doing what they've been doing for so many years. And doing it well for that matter!
So with that being said-thank you for a life time of music and a life time of memories...  Thrash Hard at what ever you guys do next!

Knuckle Junction, Chicano Brown and Technical Difficulties @ the District Tavern from 2/08/2013
review by Mickey Sixx

This was an awesome night for live underground music. The place was packed, the drinks cheap and the bands were all top notch. The music started off with Technical Difficulties. And hey, where have you guys been all my life! I loved these guys! Technical Difficulties are great punk band that reminded me of local legends Malignus Youth, not much of a resemblance in styles, but something there took me back to the DPC watching Malignus. Any how, they were great! Their music was fast paced and very energetic with catchy riffs and kick ass vocals with a drum back beat that held it all together. The music itself was a good solid punk rock stemming from 80's hardcore but keeping their music their own. The singer obviously loved what he was doing as he was dancing all over the stage and singing his heart out. I cant say enough good things about these guys and I hope they play again soon so we have the chance to see them again.
Up next were that bad asses, Chicano Brown. They get up there and demolish the stage (and look pretty scary doing it!) and put on one hell of a show! This was my second time seeing the (the first at a practice when SFTU interviewed them!) and I was happy I finally got to see them on stage. They tore it up, with strong songs and great crowd appreciation. The music itself is strong and heavy, a perfect cross between punk and ... Well, PUNK!  Chicano Brown got it going on... And I hope they dont stop! And I also hope they hurry up put out a recording... Cuz they are just that dam good! And guys, when you do finally record- I want to be the first to get one!
No, the night didn't end there, no way. The HardxCore boys from Knuckle Junction were up next... What. The. Hell!?!? This band fucking blew me away! I mean-HOLY HARD CORE BATMAN! Knuckle Junction hit hard and didn't ask any questions or offer any apologies for the sonic ass whipping they unleashed. And a good one it was. I rather enjoyed Knuckle Junctions sound, they reminded me slightly of S.O.D. Which is a good thing if you ask me. We did pick up a Knuckle Junction c.d. that Billy will be reviewing soon, so keep an eye out for that. But you NEED to see them live.
Over all, the night was great. This had to be one of the best all local line ups I've seen in some time. Although the musical styles were slightly different, they all melded together perfectly. I cant wait to see more from all of these bands!

King Of The Stage!

INFERNAL AWAKENING/ DEAD CHEIFS / ZERO DEFEX/ CHICANO BROWN/ STRAIGHT JACKET/ HILLBILLY BO AND THE DOUBLE BARREL BAND/ RACE TO THE BOTTOM/ COLD CHARLIE. @ The Bashful Bandit 2/2/13

My understanding is that this event was the first round of a two or more part battle of the bands type event, where judges determine which band will go on to win the cash prize. I'm glad I'm not a judge, because all these bands tore up the floor!! Its not gonna be an easy decision!! First up was Infernal Awakening. Black Metal!! Yes, that's right, a black metal band! complete with corpse paint and all! their look was right, but the music was above all else heavy, fast and fucking evil!! I can honestly say i haven't seen many bands in Tucson that play this genre but these guys were awesome. Second to take the stage were the heavy hitters Dead Chiefs. Lets just say this- I figured the competition was over. These boys played with such power and intensity in their brand of hardcore that it is unmatched.Of course the show must go on and next up were the punk rock party boys ,Zero-D-fex. Straight up no gimmicks punk rock. They are the band that falls over and says; I've been drinking since 10 am, fuck you!! Next up, The vatos' locos Chicano Brown!! This was probably the craziest set. The crowd was really into it and they played their brand of gangster ass hardcore till shit got broken. Not too mention Chino the vocalist, I've said it before and ill say it again- greatest punk rock vocalist around, hands down. Fifth band to take the stage was Straight Jacket! Groovy, fast, Latino punk rock with a ska chaser! Definitely music you can not only slam to, but dance to as well!! These guys had the whole crowd moving!!

Next up was Hillbilly Bo and the Double Barrel Band. These guys are insane! Outlaw southern punk rock kings of Tucson!! The band brought the party for sure and shredded the stage to pieces!! Every time i see these guys its more fun then the last time and they keep getting better and better every fucking show! It was a tough act to follow, but next to the stage was Race to the Bottom. These dudes played their style of melodic power rock impeccably. They were all great musicians and the crowd really dug it!! Last to the stage was Cold Charlie. A bass heavy sound and gruff vocals gave their punk rock style a real heavy edge!! With so many great bands its gonna be a hard decision for the judges, but make sure you go out and see the next event Feb. 16 @ the Bashful Bandit and find out who is the king of the stage!!!

DRUGxCULTURE (WA), Stress Relief (CA), Swampwolf (Flagstaff), Man Bites Dog
and Sex Prisoner @ Tan Line Studios 1/09/13
review by Mickey Sixx

What a packed show this was. For a Tuesday night, it seemed more than half of the Tucson underground scene was there. It was standing room only, to the point where there wasn't even that much room to stand. Which made it an even better experience an even better one. Lets get to the music. The ever so bad ass SEX PRISONER was playing when I showed up. I have heard them before, but never live. They were kick ass! Tons of energy that got the venue moving (in a circular motion I think its called Slam Dancing.) Definitely one of my new favorite local hardcore bands! Up next was another fast as lightning HC band called STRESS RELIEF! They were as bad ass as SEX PRISONER was. Super high energy and full of action for their entire set.
Following in STRESS RELIEFS shoes wasn't going to be an easy task, but DRUG CULTURE did, and they did it well! This by far was my favorite performance of the night. These guys were every where! And I mean everywhere! They were in the crowd, the crowd was into them! It was insane. I managed a quick word with the singer after the bands set, apparently he had hurt his leg pretty bad and was having a hard time moving during the set. Then again, I wouldn't have been able to tell if he hadn't said anything! Just goes to show his dedication.
Local heroes MAN BITES DOG was next and surprisingly enough, they weren't that loud... But they were spot on in doing what they do- And that's kicking some serious ass!  You can see these guys play several times in a month and they never get old. I cant wait to see more from these bad asses in the future (speaking of, make sure to check back in Feb for an exclusive MBD interview!)
Last but not least was Flagstaff's SWAMP WOLF. Another delight for this evening of fine hardcore music. And a great way to finish out the night. SWAMP WOLF really grabs you in and sets the place on fire with their heavy sound.
The night was a good night for underground music and really had me reminiscing about the old days when bands would play where ever and when ever they could. It was really cool to see such a large turn out and I cant wait for the next show at the Tan Line Studio.

SICK SENSE ( Riverside CA ) DEAD CHIEFS / CHICANO BROWN / KNUCKLE JUNCTION / SINDICATE @ The Runway 11/17
Review by
Billy Walker

The Runway is a small run down dive bar on the edge of nowhere here in Tucson. Despite the location its always been a great place to go out, get fucked up and witness some pretty awesome shows. This line up features some of the heaviest hitters in the Hardcore scene and the fact that SICK SENSE is playing made it a show not to miss. DEAD CHIEFS started the show with their heavy ass in your face sounds! I saw these guys at Vaudeville when i first came to Tucson and have made it a goal to see them every chance i can! They have recordings coming out soon so pay attention!! You wont be disappointed, and if you haven't seen them live you need to!! Next up was CHICANO BROWN , probably my favorite Tucson punk band right now. These vatos look like four east LA gangsters who took a scruffy white dude hostage and came to shred the place!! Chino the vocalist is amazing, hands down the fucking greatest punk rock vocalist in Tucson right now. If you argue that, you have not seen them lately.their brand of hardcore will get you moving for sure!! Next up were the ass kickers KNUCKLE JUNCTION. Keith and the rest of the guys are high energy, in your face knock a hole in your chest hardcore. You need to see them any chance you can!! Last up for the locals was The SINDICATE. I cant say enough great things about these guys, Bruce is probably the greatest drummer I have ever seen and their musicianship is tight and professional. I know they play pretty often so go see them if you haven't  you'll know what i mean!!! Check out their interview in issue 2!!! They also have some gangster ass merch out right now, so hit em up!!! Last but not least was SICK SENSE!!!! These Riverside punk rockers tore up the floor!! Fast, powerful, awesome!! This was definitely a rad show, sorry if you missed it, but keep your eyes open and check out the rest of these bands any chance you get!!

SLOW CHILDREN ( Riverside CA), BESMIRCHERS,  THE INSURGENCE ( Seattle WA) BRICKTOP @ The Surley Wench 11/09.
review by Billy Walker

Being as i haven't seen the amusing antics of the BESMIRCHERS in quite a while nor had i ever seen BRICKTOP i figured this would be a great show for sure. Throw in Touring bands SLOW CHILDREN and THE INSURGENCE and you've got a party. Slow children started the night with their speedy, slightly melodic punk rock and definitely set the pace for an upbeat evening of joyous sounds. Next came the Besmirchers, a band that definitely makes me think if G.G. Allin raped the Ramones, this is what it would sound like. Lenny Mentals' on stage antics always make their set one to remember. Next came the Insurgence, Lenny's sons band touring from Seattle. These guys shredded up the floor with their powerfully pungent punk! The last to destroy was Bricktop. These guys were the crowd favorite for sure. they played with a lot of energy and really played to the crowd! I'm glad i got a chance to experience all these great bands together!! Check them out live or in recording!!

Psychosomatic, Infernal Awakening, Awaken the End
and Casket Birth The Bashful Bandit-
Live Metal from November 1st, 2012
review by Mickey Sixx

This was one hell of a night for Metal Heads all around town. Unfortunately I was late and missed Awaken the End AND Casket Birth (Both of who I really wanted to see!)  But the night was not lost in any way.  Infernal Awakening were setting up as I walked in the door. I was expecting something extreme from these guys because they had two large bull skulls with pentagrams carved into them sitting on stands. I have to say that I was not in the least bit disappointed in what I saw AND heard! This band was great! They were extremely heavy and hit the Death Metal sound square on the head. Each song was a melody of destruction and was even  a bit spooky at times. I spoke with them after their show and picked up a killer C.D. from them (review coming soon!) I want to see more from this band.
Up next was Psychosomatic all the way from Sacramento, Cali. A mix of old school thrash and punk mixed with a touch of grind for speed and more destruction. These guys were a great live band and had the  Bandit  jumping. They reminded me of thrash masters-Exodus! Their sound was fast, heavy and melodic with outstanding vocals that were shared between the band members. It was like "musical vocalists" as everyone but the drummer sang more than a few songs. And they ALL sounded great! Their vocals, even though all different, were done well so it didn't sound like an entirely different band. Psychosomatic was great and I hope they come back through this dusty old town again and say hello. Until then, you can check them out here. Be sure to check out ALL the bands that played that night. I really wish that I would have been there in time to see all the bands, but things happen, you should still give the other bands a listen, here's a link to the event-
https://www.facebook.com/events/210583209074788/ Fans of Thrash and Death Metal will NOT be disappointed!

Get Lenguas Largas Out of Debt with-
Lenguas Largas, Man Hands and Man Bites Dog
Live at The District Tavern
review by Mickey Sixx

The weekend before  Halloween is always a fun time in downtown Tucson. Nothing like going out to see a show, then seeing all the great costumes people dream up. Some of them are pretty cool. But the highlight of this night was the music. Man Bites Dog opened the chilly night with their high octane, fast and furious punk rock music! I love watching these guys, they always put on a great show with killer music that will keep you on the edge of you seat. Make sure not to miss their next show on November 14th at TLMS (check the upcoming events page).
Man Hands,  a three piece band from Phoenix was up next to rock the night. As the female vocalist traded lyrics with their male vocalist, ManHands delivered a great performance with hard hitting music that really got the costumed bodies moving (check back soon for their C.D. review coming soon!). There was a raffle being held with lots of great prizes. Unfortunately I didn't get to stay for Lenguas Largas, but the two bands that I did see were great and I cant wait for the opportunity to see them again.

Resisting Arrest AZ Presents-Radiation Suitz, Thrift Store Throw Down and The Sterling 202's live at TLMS
Review by Travis Fry
Doomed from the start or at least that's what I thought about this show. The original venue closed down forcing a last minute change, three bands dropping with little to no notice and a diverse line up. Luckily the scene pulled through to support the bands. First up was Radiation Suitz. They entertained with their b-movie costumes and theatrics. If you wanted to be entertained they did their job! The music started a bit muddy but was quickly rectified and they jammed hard. They ended up with the biggest crowd watching them. If you haven't see this up and coming band make sure you get your ass to their next show.
Next up was the ever crazy antics of Thrift-store Throw-down. The only time I had seen them before, they had done a Dead Kennedy's set so as a joke they started their set with Kill the Poor. Derrick was dressed in a Alice in Wonderland dress and gave quite the performance with crowd interaction and tons of energy. A great energetic, fun and flat out entertaining band.
Last up for the night were the punkabilly band the Sterling 202s. Never have seen these guys it was quite a treat to see them play.they were upbeat with awesome bass lines on a standing bass. A great ending to the night.
If you missed this show, you really missed a fantastic show. The diversity of the bands (heavy punk to punk rock to punkabilly) really made the night as wonderful as it was. For only three bands I could not have been happier.

Southwest Terror Festival featuring 32 of the heaviest, most brutal bands that you ever heard of!
 review by Mickey Sixx
This was an awesome event from start to finish and I am glad to have been there for it! With that being said, lets get to the review. They had the Rock set up with two stages for a constant flow of music, which was a great idea in my opinion. The larger of the two was the main stage at the Rock (the Earsplit PR stage). The pool room was completely emptied out and the band would set up and play in there(Metalifestyle.com stage). It worked well, as there was hardly any lapse in the live music at all. I was a bit late and missed the first couple of bands. Enirva was next up, so I was treated to some "Stoner Rock" as soon as I got there.
Much to my delight, Methra was setting up and gearing up to go on the Metalifestyle.com stage. I was very excited for this band! I've heard a lot of their music on CD and vinyl, but this was the first time seeing them perform live. And I can tell you- they did not disappoint one bit! I'm glad I FINALLY was able to catch a live set from these guys.
What happened next can only be explained like this, I was driving 100 mph when I ran head on with a train doing 200 mph. Cave Dweller! These guys were awesome! They came on stage and delivered one hell of a performance. A lot of people, myself included, would say that they really stole the show.
Territory came on next and delivered a great set of "Hard Core" music. The promoters did a great job of mixing the music genres with out it being awkward. Twingiant was next on the Earsplit PR stage. The music was good and heavy, but the real power was in the vocalist voice! With his big, viking like beard and deep gravely voice, Twingiant, a Phoenix metal band, was a force to  be reckoned with (check back later for Twingiant's C.D. review!).
The term, take over and destroy is a pretty cool saying in itself. Then add heavy guitars, hard hitting bass and drums, a vocalist that sounds like he gargles with razors and for shits and giggles, throw in a keyboard player? Huh? Yes, that's right, a keyboardist! And it was insane! TOAD was brilliant! I was absolutely blown away by these guys, a great band that I hope come back to Tucson sooner or later, a great  band who performed a great set I might add.
Last, but not in any way at all least, Diseased Reason! These guys were fucking AWESOME!!! Definitely my favorite band of the night. This grindcore/crust band came on and pretty much decimated any bit of hearing that I had left that night. In between screams of rage, we were greeted with low guttural growls, the vocalist was insane and didn't hold back anything. The band followed his lead and played fast and heavy. They never let up, not even  when the singer threw the mic into a lady's face who was standing in the front of the stage! I cant wait to hear more from this insane band. Great music from a great band, hopefully the CD will be hear soon! When it is, go and get it! If you get a chance to see them live-DO IT!
And that was it in a nutshell for night one of the Southwest Terror Fest.

Metal Saint, Skull Pin (Debut), Lethal Dosage, Angelic to Ashes and Hemlock. At the Rock.
review by Mickey Sixx
There's something very gratifying about watching metal bands at the Rock. Ever since the late 80's and the place was called "Muddbugs", I've been lucky  to be going there on weekends to see some of Tucson's best up and coming metal bands as well as major acts from all over the world.
This night was no different. Thrash metal new comers, Metal Saint opened the night with their shredding guitar leads and take no prisoner sound. All I can say is that I absolutely loved these guys! This was my second time seeing them perform and I can honestly say that I was even more impressed with them this time. And I was really impressed with them the first time. They had a more than a few heads banging during their set and the crowd definitely let them know that they were loved. I cant for a release for them!
Up next was the debut of Skull Pin. They came out strong and heavy with some really good sounding music. They were really good and played a tight and clean set. If you happened to miss their debut, you can always check them out in mid October. Skull Pin will be opening the night over at R.J.s replays with Tucson metal veterans, Gods of Wrath!
Much to my surprise, Lethal Dosage was going to be playing that night also and they were going on next.  Of course, L.D. did not and will not, ever disappoint! These boys are GOOD at what they do, and that's make some of the best heavy metal music in town today! You can never see L.D. to many times, it seems they get better with each performance.
Angelic to Ashes was up next. Never seeing them before, I listened intently to the heavy wall of sound that was coming from the stage. They had a mixture of vocals from I believe three different singers.  The front man providing the lead, throaty vocals, followed by two others with a clean, harmonizing style of voice. Over all, between the music and the vocals, they sounded really good. A good fit for the night.
Unfortunately, I was unable to stick around for Hemlock, and I also noticed some of the other bands that were being billed weren't actually on the bill.
Over all, a great night of local metal. Keep an eye out for Metal Saint, they are a  must see band! And I'm not forgetting Skull Pin! These guys rocked and will hopefully continue to rock. Thanks again guys for a great night of METAL!

Resisting Arrest Az. presents; Jeff Swinney's Benefit Show! Featuring D.U.I Squad, Hillbilly Bo, Flying Donkey Punch, Why Bother, For Or Against, and Sindicate.
review by Travis J. Fry
The benefit show is the most honorable and overdone excuse to have a punk show. Sometimes there is a worthwhile cause and sometimes its just for the sake of having a benefit show. This benefit was for a member of our scene that needed some help. Jeff Swiney is a man that has helped out the scene time and time again and it was our turn to help him.
There were six bands playing so the set times were a little shorter than normal. For or Against started the show of with some hardcore influenced punk. The music was fast and was an amazing way to start the show off with such a high amount of energy. Then there was DUI Squad that does some great covers of many different songs ranging from the Who to Johnny Cash. Unfortunately most of the crowd ended up going outside for these guys.
Flying Donkey Punch were up next with their fast, aggressive music getting the whole crowd riled up. Definitely a crowd pleaser. Hillbilly Bo graced the stage next with their backwoods inspired punk rock. Harmonica was definitely my favorite part of this as well as the whole feel of the band. For a band who played slower songs they had some energy and quite a bit of talent. Why Bother? Was up next. This band seemed to surprise everybody. I had seen them before but they have definitely gotten way better now. The singer has definitely stepped up her game and come out of her shell since last time I saw them. Her screams were aggressive while keeping it with the music. They were my favorite of the night and definitely bummed about the shortened set. Last up was the Sindicate. I have seen them numerous times before and as always they played a great set.
With long set up times the show didn't flow as well as it could have but luckily we had six great bands to make you forget the long pauses between music. If you missed any of these bands you should probably see them next time they play. You will not be disappointed!

Assemblage 23 with Espermachine
 and Hero Defekt
 review by Mila Dean
The night was one of electronic music. Electronic music encompasses everything from synth-pop to industrial. For those who might not be in the know about these particular genres, they can be identified by the use of electronic components. Synthesizers, computers, keyboards with per-programmed tracks and sequencers replace many, or even all, instruments normally played on stage. While some might see this as providing less of a challenge when it comes to performing live, just as many issues can arise, and it takes just as much talent to pull off a good show. Considering that many of these bands aren't just relying on the machines to do all the work, things can get complex. And interesting, of course. To my ears, the sounds of an industrial show done well surpass those of other genres. This is not to say I do not like listening to other bands live. I just have a great appreciation for the combination of instruments and these other tools of creating music. When it's all seamlessly married, there is much joy in this goth girl's heart.
I've been looking forward to this show for a good while. I was a little worried about the construction happening and what it might mean for the turnout. Happily, it didn't seem to be an issue. It was nice to see the fuckery going on with 4th ave couldn't keep the people away as I have seen it do with other recent trips down there. What should have been crowded bars were ghost towns. Not this time. This time, the house was packed, and everyone was eager to hear the music. Still, I have to wonder if there would have been even bigger numbers if the street hadn't been torn to shit.
We started out with Hero Defekt. Now, I had not even heard of Hero Defekt before I got the invite to attend, and I didn't do any research into what the sound was like or any other details that might have been handy to have. I was even considering showing up late because I didn't really care about hearing them.  I can say now that not getting to hear Hero Defekt would have been a HUGE mistake. I'm so glad that I went on time and experienced this band. This was their debut show, but despite that, there seemed to already be a bit of a following. The shirts were hand made, but they were obviously done with love, and the people wearing them knew the songs well enough to dance to them.
The set began with Tommy saying "This is our debut. Fuck, there's a lot of you." He might have been nervous, but at no point was it obvious to me. They got up there, and they killed it. Truly. They started out with just two of them on stage, but eventually added a third. Everybody was obviously having a good time playing, and there was very high energy and an excellent rapport with the crowd. He talked to us and made jokes. He got people out on the floor and gave us a good time. Even when it came to the last song and there was a bit of a snag finding the right song, he didn't panic, but elicited smiles and laughter as he declared "Sorry, that was the same song. I found it. Nope. That's not it either." Many bands get flustered by this type of thing, but if Tommy did, it didn't show at all. In fact, all I saw of him was a guy having a great time doing something that he loves to do.
Espermachine kicked off what Hero Defekt called the "real show" (You're part of the real show now, guy, get used to it). This isn't a band I have heard, but I have heard of them, and most of it has been positive. You might wonder how a person can hear about music and never have a chance to check it out, and the answer to that lies in not writing down the name of the band and leaving it un-researched until you've forgotten what you were going to look for until the next time it's brought up. Anyway, knowing of Espermachine, I was glad to finally get a chance to listen.
Immediately, I was pulled in. There are a lot of similarities, I felt, to Covenant and VNV Nation. Very melodic sounds backed by driving beats and vocals I liked quite a bit. Not just lyrics, mind. But an excellent voice that went very well with the music. Again, there was a lot of energy while they were on the stage, and a lot of participating with the crowd. They got people moving, dancing, and enjoying themselves and were doing the same things themselves. The set that they did was atypically short, but they still managed to squeeze in a good number of songs, and those songs were not lacking in length. One song flowed into the next very well, and even sitting there looking right at them, there were times when I forgot there were just two guys on stage. The music was complex and rich, as one does come to expect with electronic music of varying types.
I didn't hear anything that I disliked or was even just 'meh' about. But my favorite song was, hands down, Siberia. There was just something about the way that it came together, the music itself, the lyrics, and the feelings behind it, that was perfect to me.
The band that I had really come to hear was Assemblage 23. This is a band that I have been listening to since I was 20. I hadn't yet been able to go to a show, as things just didn't happen to line up. Needless to say, I couldn't bear to pass up the chance to see them, and in such an intimate setting. The crowd really began to pile in just before A23 was to take over, and from where I was sitting, I could hardly see the other side of the bar through them. There have been many memorable beginnings to shows over my history, but this will go down as one of the best:  "Hello, Tucson! We are Assemblage 23! And we came to make
you dance!" And dance they did.
A23 came in with a very strong start, not that I expected any less of them. But they held tight to it through the entire set. I had thought that since the show began sort of early and the other acts had truncated time slots, that A23's performance would likewise be shortened. I should not have feared. They presented us with a good mixture of older songs and those off of their newest album, giving me a sneak peak at what I haven't heard yet, but allowing me to sing along with what I already knew and really feel like I was able to participate. I like it when bands introduce the crowd to their recent work, and even when they surprise us with things that nobody has heard yet, but there's something special about hearing music you already know done live. A certain feeling of excitement and fluttery heart when the first notes of a familiar thing rise up.
When it came around that their time playing for us was over, we were informed that they don't wander off stage and wait for their egos to be sufficiently boosted before coming back out for an encore. They just asked us if we'd like to hear more. Then, as is not the norm for most bands, they didn't just play one song for said addition, but many. They didn't even just give us one encore, really. After a good number of extra songs were played, we were asked again if we'd like to hear more, and then more was given. It was made very clear to the crowd that we were appreciated at many times, but this above all spoke to us, I think. It's one thing to say 'thanks for coming out' and 'you guys are really great', it's another to be able to encourage an artist to give more because they know that they are loved.
The whole show, from beginning to end, was fantastic. Perfect, really. All three acts tied in to one another very nicely, the night started off very good and continued with the excellence until the very end. I'm really happy that I went, and I'm sure that I won't be forgetting the evening any time soon.

Resisting Arrest Az. presents a night of loud music at the Nest, featuring- Zero-D-Fex, Metal Saint,Knuckle Junction, Napalm Strike and Unfortunate Sircumstances
Review by Mickey Sixx Robinson
Another great show by Resisting Arrest Records. This night was a great showcasing of the different style of underground music. Starting off the night was the Zero-D-Fex, a three piece Punk band that had a lot the old school L.A. hardcore sound to them with   lyrical content dealing with subjects that included pinball machines, pissing on shit and comic books. This was a very fun band to watch, their fast tempo'd songs got the crowd wound up for the rest of the night.
Up next to grace the stage were thrash metal new comers, Metal Saint. These guys were excellent! They played the technical thrash/death metal of yester-yer and I was instantly transported back into the mid to late eighties when thrash metal was plentiful and bands like Anthrax, Exodus and Meliah Rage ruled the metal charts. Metal Saint is a must see if you havent already seen them, and chances are you havent since this show was thier first time playing out. But dont worry, you will have a chance to see them soon. Metal Saint will be playing along side fellow new comers SKULL PIN as they open the night up for HEMLOCK at the Rock on October 6 (check the UPCOMING EVENTS PAGE for more details!)
Knuckle Junction was next on the list. These guys put the H/C back in Tucson HardxCore, no question about that! They were full of energy and blasted out brutal song after brutal song.  I cant wait to hear more from this HxC band in the future.
One of the reasons that I was really excited about this show was the fact that Napalm Strike was debuting at this show. I have to say that I was highly impressed by what I saw and heard. Napalm Strike were AWESOME! When they came on the place really seemed to come to life. The songs were good, fast and technical, heavy and loud and never letting up, not even for a second. Again, if you ever have the chance to see them play, I would do it! You will not be disappointed.
Unfortunatly, before Napalm Strike could finish playing their set, the Tucson Police Department made an unexpected visit for what ever reason ( I guess they have nothing better to do on a Saturday night than bother people listening to music, good job guys! Good job,) needless to say, nobody was happy. Especially since there was still one more band playing, Unfortunate Sircumstance. And they were going to debut their new female singer also. I guess we're gonna have to wait until next time to hear how Katrina screams with these doom violence rockers! Sorry guys! But we cant wait to see you next time.

Artists For Autism - Presented by Chris Leon, Zombilly Ray and The Surly Wench Pub
Review by Writer Mila Dean

The show was slated to start at 8pm, and I was pretty certain that I wouldn't be making it for the opening bands. Between getting a late jump on the evening and the twenty goddamned minutes it took me to find a fucking spot to park, I thought I would - at least - miss the first band. My plan had been to immediately find somebody who had managed to arrive early enough to hear whomever had gone on and conduct an interrogation worthy of GITMO. Through some divine luck, even my dallying couldn't stand in the way, and I got to the Wench well before anybody took the stage, saving some hapless victim from the pleasure of my company. As it turns out, one of the musical guests who had been slated to perform couldn't make it, and I believe this was my saving grace.
The show was put on to benefit an Autism program in the Tucson area. Besides a line-up of auditory entertainment, there were several local artists present with wares for sale (portions of the profits going to the cause) and for a silent auction. From jewelry to paintings, there were plenty of things to choose from, most of which I regrettably had to leave behind.
Musically speaking, the lineup was quite diverse, Broken Arcade kicked off the festivities with a distinctive and interesting theme. The trio - plus laptop - made their Surly Wench debut with a mixture of original material and a few covers. They really hit their stride at about the third song, losing the edge of nervousness and easing into the rest of their set. Their sound was a decent combination of dance and indy, bringing to the table something I feel isn't heard too often. I was reminded a bit of Gotye and MGMT, and a little bit of Zooey Deschanell's band in Yes Man. A little bit strange, a little bit kooky, and a good deal of freshness.
Sandwiched between the bands was DJ Kindaphresh. He came with a full compliment of equipment, mixing live. His set was tight and not overly re-mixed. Unlike many club DJs running around these days, he played music at tempos that were actually dance-able. The best part of his time on stage was that he looked like he was having a blast.
At midnight we saw Full Story At Midnight take over, ready to fucking rock the house. These guys are energetic on stage and obviously passionate about what they do. These guys really don't joke around when they get on stage (okay, there's jokes, but not when it comes to the music). They played a few covers for us but mostly gave us their own songs. Influenced by greats like The Misfits, this horror rock band brings a very tight set. Singer Elvis Aron Deadly even showed a softer side when he took a moment to get the crowd to help him make a video saying "hello" to an autistic boy named Max. These guys really got their listeners going, old fans and new, and even spawned a slightly-against-the-rules mosh pit. As of when I left the Wench, there was a men's size large Full Story At Midnight t-shirt in the stage lights.

New From the Front,
review by Mickey Sixx mickeysixx@scenesfromtheunderground.com
This was an interesting mix of music, three completely different types of music that would have other wise clashed, somehow worked for this event. Whether it was the venue that made it work or some cosmic powers that be, it worked!
Warpstar started the night to a relatively packed house. The members of the band were all very young or so it seemed, but didn't seem to have any problems handling their instruments. Although not a type of music I'm into, (they were a bit on the pop side of things) they were enjoyable.
Up next was the band I went out for that night- News From The Front. This high energy 3 piece were on tour and finishing up here in Tucson. They were fast and energetic and played the crowd well. Their style was good and had an edge to it as their lyrics dealt with various social issues. They were fun to watch and very easy on the ears despite the massive volumes that they played at. To hear more from News From The Front, you can check out these rowdy punk rockers at http://www.nftfpunk.com/Home.html. There you can get all the up to date news and grab the latest release as well as download a few of their older releases. This was a great band to see if you ever have the chance, and chances are, you will. These guys seem to be working on stuff non stop, so don't be surprised to see them coming back through our dusty little town again in the future.
To finish the night out, we had the acoustic guitar playing of Alex Whelan.  Now I'm not sure how this odd mix of music fits in together, but like I said, it did, and as it was, Alex fit right in also... Playing folk like songs, the acoustic crooner sang and played his heart out and did a very good job at doing so. Im guessing he's a permanent fixture at this venue, so chances are you'll eventually see him around sooner or later.

Suicidal Tendencies, Hill Billy Bo and Flying Donkey Punch at the Rock
review by Billy Walker wildbillyw@scenesfromtheunderground.com
I'm going to be honest with you,  I listened to Suicidal Tendencies when I was a kid but haven't listened to any of their recent records nor have I seen them live, so this treat for me! Hilly Billy Bo and the Double Barrel Band started the night off with their kick you out of the jacked up for pick-up and leave you laying on the side of the road, drunk in a mud puddle style of Southern/Punk/Rock. The band plays very well; Bo is an unavoidable object of attention onstage and they are FUN! I'm sure most of you have, but if not, go see them live, they are awesome. They are opening for D.R.I next month at the Rock.
Flying Donkey Punch followed, with their high energy hardcore. I love this band! If I had to pick one band that best represented Tucson Hardcore, I'd say it's them. They blazed through their set with lightning speed and ended with my favorite F.D.P song, "Army of None". It was rad. If you have not yet done so, please check these guys out!
Then next thing I knew, fucking everyone is piling up at the front of the stage, old dudes, Punks, Metal Heads,  Hardcore Kids, Chicks, a zebra; OK, no fucking zebra, but you get the point. Everybody was there together to witness a legendary band take the stage and fuck shit up! They can on and WHAM! Shit got crazy, the pit was nuts, everybody was stage diving, screaming and singing along, It was cool. The band had so much energy and there is so much of a positive message with the music,  it's hard not to love these guys. They rock! Most of the set was mixed up, but they did play a lot of their older stuff, which was awesome. This was a lot of fun, the opening bands played well, S.T. kicked ass and the crowd was insane! Next time they come to Tucson, you better get there!

RESISTING ARREST ARIZONA PRESENTS- UNSTABLE YOUTH AND MORE AT THE NEST SKATE PARK!
review by Mickey Sixx
Unfortunately I was late and missed the Cactus Rats (formally called the Necro-Berries). From what I hear though, they did a great job getting the crowd hyped up for the rest of the night! Up next was The Denied, a classic, old style punk rock band with dual vocals that feature both male and female singers. You cant Deny (get it?) that these punk rockers  love what they do. With studded belts and fast and melodic riffs, the Denied are a definite crowd favorite.
Up next, all the way from Kansas City Mo. was Vomit Assault (not to be confused with Tucson's Freedom Assault). A 4-piece melodic crust/d-beat band that was very heavy (Keep an eye out for a review of their record "Raised for the slaughter... Until they kill us all" in issue # 2). The crowd seemed to like them, as plenty of people had on either a Vomit Assault pin or patch on their vests and jackets. A great band to check out if you ever have the chance.
To fill out and end the night, we had the always fun and energetic Unstable Youth. All the way from Cotton Wood Arizona, these hair in the air punk rockers always play a great show! And this night was no different. Playing a blistering set full of energy, the crowd showed them a lot of love and made sure their appreciation was showed by the circle pit that engulfed most of the dance floor for the remainder of the night. Another great show put on by Resisting Arrest and several bands that couldn't have been a better fit for the night.

TLMS presents- Pop Gestapo, Man Bites Dog, Kid Puto and The Imposters
review by Mickey Sixx mickeysixx@scenesfromtheunderground.com
This was my first time coming to TLMS and I want sure what to expect. I have to say that what I found was a really relaxed environment with a friendly door person and great music levels coming from inside of the building.
I was a bit late but was just in time to see Pop Gestapo tearing it up with their punk rock tones. The songs were good and the music was mixed so that not one person was louder than the other. And considering TLMS is a bit of a small venue, I thought for sure there would be sound problems, but I was wrong, thankfully. The music was loud enough to be good, and Pop Gestapo were definitely a great band to finally see live. If you want more from this "BeefxCore" band,
  click this link https://www.facebook.com/pages/Pop-Gestapo/187060791334586
Up next was the self titled "king pins of Tucson hardcore" Man Bites Dog. And you know, they just might be right about that title! This was the first time that I had the  pleasure of seeing them live. The music was fast and heavy, just how I like it, with distortion drenched guitars and machine gun style snare beats. The bass driving hard carrying the songs note by agonizing note. Man Bites Dog is a force to be reckoned with and I hope Tucson gets the chance to see more of them. From what I hear, they are currently working on a 7", cant wait to hear that, but if you cant wait, find them on Tumbler at  http://manbitesdogaz.tumblr.com/  for more information.
Ending the night was another awesome band that I had never seen, Kid Puto! Wow, where has this band been all my life? Another fast and loud band, a bit on the old school side in the vein of Blag Flag and Blatz, Kid Puto sounded great! Fronted by two vocalists, the male and female duo traded lyrics like cards at a poker game (does that even make sense? Hmm, I don't play much poker, so bear with me please.) with flawless execution. Behind the dynamic duo the band shredded the airwaves with their superb sounds that was like, as the say "music to my ears." I managed to pick up a Kid Puto cassette (yes, cassette. That's not a typo!) and eagerly played it on the way home from the show. Unfortunately I was unable to find any links to Kid Puto, but check our "Upcoming Events" page and Calendar and see if they pop up on our radar at all. This show  was killer and I'm glad I went. TLMS is a great new all ages place and I hope it flourishes, if the keep putting on shows like this one, I'm sure staying alive wont be a problem.
